Plastic Coatings

Our clients  come to APS for our scientific expertise when the endeavor is enhancing an existing product, improving manufacturing  efficiencies, or discovering a solution that  creates an innovative new product.

Conventional plastic coatings adhere to materials by simple mechanical  forces will be easily broken causing peeling or delamination.

This is not the case with chemical grafting since the attachment of the coating is accomplished by forming a covalent bond between the substrate and the monomers via the substrate activator. The chemical reaction that takes place provides subsurface penetration in addition to the chemical bond. As a result, much thinner coatings can be obtained while providing longer life and superior performance of the material.

Typical plastic coating methods can be used such as dip, spray, roll. The  chemical grafting formulation comes in contact with the surface of the substrate by any of these methods, The chemical grafting reaction occurs instantaneously upon contact with the material. The desired thickness and preferred application method will determine the viscosity of the formulation. Most formulations are water-based. The coatings can be air dried, however, heat (oven, IR, UV, etc.) may be sed to accelerate the drying time. Most formulations will dry in seconds to minutes.

Grafted Properties

Oxygen/moisture, barrier, chemical resistance, UV/ozone resistance, increased structural  strength, nonflammability/low smoke emission,  adhesion to inks/paints or other materials,  bactericidal, etc. These properties can be added to the plastic  resin or applied as a coating.

Product Enhancement:

APS' unique chemical grafting process results in  properties being permanently attached to the  substrate with the use of a specialized substrate  activator and monomer system.
